Bioresorbable (dissolving) stents are now available for Coronary Angioplasty / Stenting. Bioresorbable stents are considered the fourth revolution in interventional cardiology.
The currently available metallic drug eluting stents treat heart blocks but stay permanently as a metallic cage within the heart blood vessel. These metallic stents may provide hindrance for a future procedure if required to be performed in the same blood vessel.
On the other hand, Bioresorbable stent opens the block in heart blood vessel, stays temporarily and then gradually disappears completely over a period of 2-3 years restoring the blood vessel to its natural state. Bioresorbable stent can be advantageous in young patients undergoing Coronary Angioplasty because it provides scope for future treatment if required in the same blood vessel.
